Nelson Steel employs both tube laser cutting and sheet laser cutting as precise alternatives to traditional mechanical cutting.
Laser cutting uses a focused beam of high-energy laser light to cut various materials. The beam, when aimed and controlled by a computer, burns, melts, vaporizes or blows away by a jet of assist gas the material cut. Industrial lasers have become a mainstay in manufacturing and are used to cut flat sheets, structural components as well as piping and tubing.
Highly versatile and precise, laser cutters are capable of complex cutting operations. The laser cutting beam is normally 0.2 mm in diameter at the surface of the cut and has a power of 1,000 to 2,500 watts. Lasers are ideal cutting tools for carbon steel or stainless steels. Aluminum and copper alloys tend to reflect the laser light and absorb and conduct heat. Therefore, such materials are more difficult to laser cut.
Sheet laser cutting holds many advantages over traditional mechanical cutting techniques. Since there is no physical contact between the cutting agent (the laser beam) and the material being cut, there is no possibility of a cutting edge being contaminated by the material or of the material contaminating the cutting edge. Laser cutting is also more precise than mechanical cutting methods because the laser beam is not subject to wear. Due to their small heat-affected zones, lasers cut with reduced risk of warping. Lasers also leave high-quality edges which may eliminate or reduce secondary finishing. For parts 1/8" thick or thicker that get painted, a secondary edge cleaning may be needed.
In addition to being versatile enough to cut a broad variety of metal and non-metal materials, laser cutting highly accurate, maintain high cutting speeds, have narrow kerf widths and are capable of virtually square-cut edges.
