Punch presses, turret punch presses, and stamping presses are all important parts of Nelson Steel’s complete steel fabrication catalog. Punch presses, turret punch presses along with several tools, and stamping presses are all important pieces of equipment for a steel fabricator.
Punch Presses
For a punch press, sheet metal is sized or shaped as pressure is applied to a die holding the material. The resulting configuration depends on the form and construction of the die. These presses have two components that work together in order to produce the needed shape. The punch is attached to the ram of the machine while the die is clamped onto a flat bed or anvil perpendicular to the ram. As the machine operates, the punch exerts pressure on the stock material held in the die. Blanking dies produce slugs of sheet metal to make blanks to fit dies for later punch-press operations.
Punch presses range from small manually operated units to large powerful machines operated by CNC. No matter the size, however, all punch presses use a die set to complete the punching process with male punches and female dies making up a die set. As these pieces come together during the machine cycle, the sheet metal is shaped, or cut, into the needed form.
While it may take a large amount of time to prepare a punch press, once properly set up, it is equipped for high-volume production with a single operator being able to operate more than one unit. The capacities of the punch press are measured in tonnage.
Stamping Presses
Like punch presses. stamping presses also shape or cut metal through a process of deformation with a die. For stamping presses, the bottom portion of the die is clamped to the bed or the press. The bed, which is essentially large metal block, remains stationary throughout the machine cycle. The other half of the stamping die is affixed to the ram which moves through an up and down cycle, producing parts from the sheet stock fed through it. Stamping presses are either mechanically or hydraulically driven. In many cases, presses are linked electronically with automatic feed units which keep raw material flowing through the die.
When you choose Nelson Steel Products you can rest assured we are well-equipped to meet customer needs for steel fabrication that requires punch presses, turret punch presses, and stamping machines.
